Agricultural Land Classification Surveys

An Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) survey is a standardised method used in England and Wales to assess and grade the quality of farmland based on its physical and chemical properties, climate, and site limitations.

The surveys are available to potential purchasers of farmland, existing owners wanting a clearer understanding of their land or in planning applications where the Local Planning Authority requires these surveys to protect high-quality "Best and Most Versatile" (BMV) agricultural land from inappropriate development.

The survey includes information on Climate, Flooding, Topography/microrelief, Soil Depth, Stone content, Soil Wetness, Soil Droughtiness.

In addition the use of our drone technology can give you far more detail of:

  • 3D topographic and slope analysis

  • Aerial (under the cloud) high definition imagery

  • Thermal imaging to provide Soil and Drainage and Crop and Vegetation Health assessments

Data Centre Planning Application

We were approached by a firm of Architects coordinating a planning application for a data centre on the M25. Our clients required an Agricultural Land Classification Survey to support the application and instructed us to conduct an inspection and submit our opinion as to the agricultural viability of the site. Our experience in conducting accurate on site assessments and the forensic nature of our reporting gained from a background in relevant academic research methods, detailed analysis and the need for well evidenced and structured report writing supported our clients case for the development of the site.

Battery Storage Facility

Our client was funding a planning application for a major battery storage facility within the M25 and required an opinion on the agricultural viability of a potential site. Our investigation, concluding that the site was of limited value for future farming use, met the criteria that satisfied the authority's requirements in this respect. Our work formed part of the initial enquiries that eventually led to a continued and successful application.
